Man’s ability to move himself and his materials from one point to another on the earth significantly influences his life and his environment” Ahmed (2013). Furthermore, one of the ways by which man organizes the space around him is through formation of settlement and the use of transportation as a tool to bringing orderliness into the settlement. Furthermore, Ogunsanya (2002) emphasized on the inevitability of transportation in the city and related basic necessities of life, and stressed that man’s basic need of food, clothing and shelter could be hardly achieved without transportation. One can consider transportation to be the life of all socio-economic and political life of a nation. This means that without transportation life as it is today would be inconceivable. World Bank Review (2012) echoed the same point by stressing that economically, transport is the blood of cities in; most countries, including developing countries, cities are the major source of the national economic growth. The World Bank publication (2012) further asserted that socially, transport is the means of (and the lack of transport is the impediment to) accessibility of jobs, health, education and social services that are essential to the welfare of the people. At the outset, the motor transport enterprise held out little and daunting prospects of success for a number of reasons. First, motor vehicles were a new invention and the problems of securing spare parts, experienced drivers and skilled technicians to operate and maintain the vehicles became critical factors. Second, the roads were all seasonal, impassable during the rains and had sharp bends and steep gradients. Third, the bridges were built with wood and were often washed away by floods or destroyed by termites. These problems combined together to make road transport an enterprise that would appear to be expensive to run, unprofitable and without any bright future in a colonized and underdeveloped territory. As a matter of fact, Mr. Hulton, the Chairman of the British Cotton Growing Association (BCGA) painted a gloomy picture of roads and motor transport industry when he stated that ―metal roads and motor transport are, as far one can judge, a mistake (cited in Hopkins, 1973:196). The expatriate firms which dominated the motor transport industry in its early years confined their services to government establishments and failed to meet the transport needs of the Igbo who were and still remain a predominantly commercial and highly peripatetic society. The indigenous transport entrepreneurs emerged to fill the gap. In the words of Esse (2005:38), The expatriate transport companies played an insignificant role in the development of the industry in southeast Nigeria in terms of the services rendered to the general public and in terms of their spatial spread. They failed to satisfy the needs of Igbo traders and producers of agricultural produce, especially those cut off from the railways. They acted mainly as government contractors, providing services to the Nigerian railway and the military… It was left to indigenous transporters to fill this gap. Between 1908 and 1909, 1200 motor vehicles were imported into Nigeria. By the end of the colonial period in 1960, the numbers of commercial vehicles, cars, motor-cycles and trailers/tractors were 7,879, 11,615, 7,026 and 487, respectively, that is, a total of 27,000 vehicles (Ekundare, 1973). Although motor vehicles were introduced in the country in the first decade of the 20th century, it was not until the 1920s that the number of such vehicles considerably increased and spread across the country. Presently there are many transport companies in Nigeria and amongst them we take a look at the Chisco and ABC transport companies in other to have a comparison of there perfomance. In today’s world, transport management is a key strategic factor for the achievement of organizational goals such as economic efficiency and effectiveness. Likewise, transport decisions are important for the development and establishment of organizational policies aiming at enhancing competitiveness, customer satisfaction and profitability. ABC TRANSPORT Associated Bus Company Plc, also known as ABC Transport Plc, is a Nigerian transportation company with headquarters in Owerri, the Imo State capital. The company has been transporting passengers across Nigeria and West Africa since its incorporation in 1993, using its coach, sprinter and shuttle services. The coach service entail long distance journeys in luxury buses. This is similar to the sprinter service, which equally covers long distances but with midi buses. The shuttle service, however, covers shorter distance journeys using mini buses. Undoubtedly, ABC Transport Plc is one of the best road transport services providers in the country. Little wonder it brags about its services being in tandem with internationally-accepted standards and “specially designed for distinguished travelers who would otherwise use air service”. CHISCO TRANSPORT Chisco Transport Company was established in 1978 by Chief Dr Chidi Anyaegbu (MFR). The company started out as a micro auto parts retailer before developing into a leading transporter and brand. Chisco Transport Company diversified to deliver excellence in end to end passenger transportation/integrated logistics with ancillary service offerings that cut across Real Estate (development/management), Hospitality (Hotel & Accommodation), Oil & Gas (product development/distribution), Auto parts Dealership etc. Chisco Transport Company has over 36 years of an uncompromising drive to deliver great customer experience, this puts them in a unique position as a leading indigenous transport/integrated logistics Brand in Nigeria, and one of the best in sub-Saharan Africa. 1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Achieving organizational performance has always been the major goal behind Companies actions and strategies.
